I am taking the Thinking in Visual Metaphors course led by PJ Milani, a creator I’ve admired and re-posted for the last year or so.
Today we learned about common “limiting beliefs” and mental roadblocks to creating visuals, the importance of creating often and iterating, some common visual tropes we can re-use, and the importance of getting our work out into the wild for feedback and confidence.
With that in mind here are the first two visuals I created for the course today. The first one is supposed to be a “trading card” with an avatar and three amazing things about ourselves, represented visually:

This second is using a topic important to us, represented in one of the visual tropes. I chose creativity and making as it relates to joy and flow in my life.

I’m making a conscious choice to start with paper and pen right now. I wonder if this is courageous or lazy, but to be honest I don’t have a lot of time to fiddle with digital tools right now.
I’ll work on things with Canva later. Figma doesn’t seem worth the effort to learn so I’m working on self-acceptance of my drawing skills.
